Quartz glass

Quartz glass is made by melting various pure natural quartz (such as crystal, quartz sand, etc.). The coefficient of linear expansion is extremely small, which is 1/10~1/20 of ordinary glass and has good thermal shock resistance. It has high heat resistance, with a regular usage temperature of 1100 ℃~1200 ℃ and a short-term usage temperature of up to 1400 ℃. Quartz glass is mainly used in laboratory equipment and extraction equipment for special high-purity products. Due to its high spectral transmission, it is not damaged by radiation (other glass will darken when exposed to radiation), making it an ideal glass for spacecraft, wind tunnel windows, and spectrophotometer optical systems.

Description

1. One of the most prominent characteristics of quartz glass is its extremely low coefficient of expansion (heat shock resistance). ·Characteristics: The coefficient of thermal expansion is extremely low, about 1/10 or even 1/20 of that of ordinary glass. ·Practical significance: This means that it is extremely resistant to rapid cold and heat. Even if the quartz glass is burned until it turns red (over 1000 degrees) and immediately thrown into cold water, it will not explode. ·Combining petroleum fruits: If you want to rapidly cool and collect oil after high-temperature cracking of petroleum fruits, quartz containers can be directly opened on ice water without waiting for cooling, greatly improving efficiency. 2. Extremely high temperature resistance · Characteristics: The softening temperature can reach up to 1200 ℃ -1500 ℃ (depending on the purity), and the long-term working temperature can reach around 1100 ℃, while ordinary glass usually softens and deforms at 500 ℃ -600 ℃. ·Practical significance: It can withstand environments such as direct combustion of petroleum fruits or external high-temperature heating. 3. Excellent spectral transmittance · Characteristics: The transmittance range is extremely wide, not only able to transmit visible light, but also efficiently transmit ultraviolet and infrared rays. Ordinary glass absorbs ultraviolet radiation. ·Practical significance: If you plan to use solar energy to heat oil fruits (such as the optical focusing scheme discussed earlier), quartz glass can ensure that more solar energy (including the ultraviolet part) enters the reaction chamber, reducing energy loss. Meanwhile, it is also suitable as a container for optical analysis. 4. Extremely high chemical purity and corrosion resistance · Characteristics: The main component is silicon dioxide, which hardly reacts with other acids (such as concentrated sulfuric acid and aqua regia) except for hydrofluoric acid and hot phosphoric acid, and does not precipitate metal ions to contaminate the contents. ·Practical significance: When extracting organic matter from petroleum fruits, if there is concern about heavy metal ion pollution affecting subsequent catalytic reactions or component analysis, quartz glass is the cleanest choice. 5. High insulation performance · Characteristics: The resistance value is over a thousand times that of ordinary glass, and it has excellent electrical insulation performance even at high temperatures. ·Practical significance: This is a significant advantage when it comes to precision measurements or special environmental applications that are sensitive to static electricity. 6. Disadvantages (points to note) · Brittleness: Although heat-resistant, it is still glass, slightly harder but more brittle than ordinary glass, and afraid of severe mechanical impact and scratches. ·High cost: The manufacturing process is complex and the price is much higher than ordinary glass. ·Hydrofluoric acid taboo: Never come into contact with hydrofluoric acid as it will corrode.
